Foreign Medical Graduate Examination (FMGE)
FMGE
Hoards of
Indian students travel abroad for their medical education owing to fewer seats
and stiff competition in the country. Such students required to pass the
screening test conducted by the MCI before they can start a medical practice.
Data shows that from 2012 & 2016, only 16% of those appeared for the
screening tests have passed. The medical colleges in India can take about 67000
annually while those of engineering colleges is about 25 times of that number.
Therefore severe lack of a sufficient number of medical colleges has resulted
in stiff competition for the existing medical seats. This has, in turn, initiated an increasing
trend of Indian students going abroad for their medical education. This is
where the Limra
Educational Consultants play a significant role. While some countries
provide standard medical education, some do not maintain similar standards.
Hence, only 16% of them pass the Foreign Medical Graduate Examination (FMGE),
which is a prerequisite to embark upon medical practice in India. Indian
students can get their medical qualification from any recognized medical
education institution in a foreign country. But to be able to practice in India
subsequent to obtaining their degree abroad, the students are required to
register with the State Medical Council (SMC). Furthermore, SMCs register a
student with foreign medical qualification only after he clears the Foreign
Medical Graduate Examination (FMGE) conducted by the National Board of
Examination (NBE). The FMGE is conducted twice a year in June and December
where the aspirant has to score a minimum of 50% marks in each of the papers to
pass. The coaching rendered by Limra Educational Consultants helps the students to be
successful in these tests. Only three attempts are awarded to the candidates to
pass the examination. This being a statutory requirement as per Section 13(4A)
of the Indian Medical Council Act, 1956 amended in 2002.
